By meeting with an individual therapist, you are taking a step towards gaining clarity and insight into the way you think and feel. An individual therapist can provide clarity and understanding to your experience as well as provide the tools and techniques for you to create the life you want.
What distinguishes couples therapy from individual therapy, is that couples therapy focuses on the relationship as the client. Together you and your partner can focus on increasing communication skills, building or enhancing emotional and physical intimacy, and overall strengthening the quality of your relationship. You or your partner may find it beneficial to continue or begin individual therapy to have a separate space where you can focus on yourself.
Parents may feel worried when they see changes in behaviour in their child or in their relationship; therapy can teach kids age appropriate coping skills and the ability to express themselves to their parents and explain what they are feeling. Of course, safety is always put first, and the limits of confidentiality will be clearly discussed with you and your children before any therapy begins. Introducing therapy to children and adolescents welcomes them into a space that is totally theirs. Children and teens are free to express and explore their feelings with a professional that can help them put words to how they feel, learn safe and helpful ways to process their feelings and experiences, and just be themselves without any judgment.
EMDR Therapy was developed in the late eighties and was first used with combat veterans experiencing PTSD, but has quickly become useful in addressing any symptoms associated with stress and trauma (from PTSD symptoms like flashbacks, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, anxiety and phobias, through the continuum to depression, over-reactive anger, worrying, disturbed sleep and so on — anything we’re referring to when we say we’re "stressed out").
